Monitech designs equipment in-house for use in hazardous areas using many different techniques based on customer specific applications.

One of these techniques is Intrinsic Safety (IS), where the heat and electrical energy in the system is limited to a safe level which is unable to cause an ignition in a flammable atmosphere.

For underground coal mining Monitech’s IS equipment is designed for the most hazardous Zone 0 applications and has a Ex ia I Ma rating.

This means that even in the unlikely event of any two components failing at the same time, methane gas and coal dust cannot be ignited.

It is important to remember that IS equipment is subject to a loop approval from a certification body.

IS equipment can thus not be used on their own, only as part of a certified system.
